Our second round DPI competition saw only 6 images out of the 56 submitted scoring a maximum 10 points and of these winning images the judge’s favourite was this excellent portrait of “Rajasthan Man”.

The judge commented that his choice was based upon the photographer’s skill in achieving a great “depth of field” enhanced by superb “lighting” emphasising the rugged skin and giving the viewer a brief insight into his life and character.

The photographer Dominic Byrne commented: “The image was taken in a small village in the desert outside Jaipur. I was working in the Middle East and decided to take a short break to India with the intention of photographing some of the local people. I had arranged a tuk-tuk driver to take me to some locations and to act as an interpreter and he would stop at some small tea stands and ask the people if they were happy for me to take some photographs. Mostly they were very amenable but would then look terrified when I brought out my enormous lighting kit. It was all good fun with plenty of laughs and plenty of tea drunk and I ensured that everyone I photographed got a printed copy of their photograph.”

“This particular image was made using a Nikon D700, a 24-70mm lens at 56mm, 1/250s F5.6 ISO 100. I used an Elinchrome Ranger with a 1 Metre softbox for the lighting.”
