So, when you get asked by Wymondham Magazine Editor & Town Councillor Kim Carsok, whether you would be interested in writing a regular column for the local magazine, of course you have to say yes, not only to support a local business but also to share your knowledge for others. But there was one condition, Kim had to come and have a training session with me! Let's see how she got on…

10 minutes out of town at the amazing Morley Village Hall, where my private studio is based, I was ready and waiting. The windows open, the sun shining in and the customary Mariah Carey CD playing on in the background. The bonus of this venue is it has such incredibly beautiful outdoor spaces, so you can come along and walk around the grounds, cycle there in around 30 minutes or have your own mini workout outside on the grass - it truly is a little gem.

Well, Kim didn’t fancy coming alone so she roped in her other half Jimmy. After filling in a few forms a week or so before, the rest was down to me. I kept it a secret what we were going to do as I didn’t want them to get too nervous or anxious, after all when you do something new like visiting a gym or starting Personal Training, it can be daunting, but my job is to try and dispel that and make sure it's fun!

Once Jimmy had disclosed 37 different types of injuries, in the hope of getting by as a spectator, I quickly put that aside and focused on the job in hand, mainly dusting off my skin tight lycra unitard and matching headband, ready to try and look the part at least.

We started off with a brief warm up of a few minutes on the air bike and the rowing machine to get the heart rate up, the muscles warm and the joints ready for our monster effort.

As this was only a taster session, it wasn’t too structured but we made sure we worked all of the body. Lots of repetitions on the battle ropes which both took to like a duck to water, considering they were new to them. Scarily Kim had a very natural whipping action, which she made look far too natural. Then it was on to some squats and lunges to firm up the bottom half and some core work to help tighten up those six packs. We did a variety of exercises on machines, with equipment and some just using bodyweight. The joy of exercise is that the options are endless and with equipment it is so versatile.

Now, being honest and not biassed, like most of my clients, Kim and Jim were much fitter than they thought they were or led me to believe, which is always a great find. We had lots of fun and plenty of mini breaks to catch our breath and re-hydrate. Jim made a habit of ‘accidentally’ spilling his water down his t-shirt to make out he was sweating due to working hard. But between us, I saw through that, you can’t trick the trickster right? But for the Instagram pictures, it will look extremely impressive!

Were Kim and Jim athletes? No, but they had a great foundation of fitness and as a coach, my job is to find, harness and develop that inner athlete we all have. And what I mean by that is not to coach you so you can run a marathon or swim the channel, unless you want to, but just to help you become the best version of yourself. Well done guys, hopefully we will see you again!
