It has been a busy and exciting first nine months since Norfolk Archaeological Trust (NAT) took ownership of Moot Hill and began its long-term project to conserve the site. And now, on Thursday 17th September and Sunday 20th September, Moot Hill will be opening to the public for the first time as part of Heritage Open Days. Whether you are interested in archaeology, local history, conservation, or the future of Norfolk's heritage, this is a unique chance to gain insight into a remarkable site to ensure its survival for generations to come.
Moot Hill is an ancient monument on the Heritage at Risk register. Thanks to the generosity of an individual donor, NAT was able to acquire this exceptional archaeological site.
Alongside the consultation events and survey, NAT gave a well-attended talk at Wymondham Bridewell WI, sharing the story of the Trust and what is currently known about Moot Hill. A small grant through South Norfolk Councillor Ward funding will also support a creative Minecraft project for young people, inviting students to visit the site and digitally recreate how they imagine it may once have looked. NAT has also secured Love Norfolk funding to run two nature photography workshops at Moot Hill, and a “Support Your Site” scheme has also been introduced where people can directly contribute to the conservation with a regular monthly donation.
Work is now underway to create new routes and pathways, with the aim of opening initial circular paths around the edge of the monument in September/October 2026. These paths will use natural materials, including woodchip and dead hedging, giving people initial access to part of the site. We understand that some visitors may be disappointed that the centre of the monument will not be open at this stage, but further research and careful planning are needed before this sensitive part of the site can be safely accessed.
