There’s a chance to enjoy a charming classic comedy when The Smallest Show On Earth, a 1957 movie, is screened in the Regal Lounge at the Wymondham and District Ex-Services Club on Sunday 4th December at 2:30pm (during the town’s Wynterfest event). Presented by the Ex-Services Club, supported by members of the former Regal Experience Group, the show is a tribute to local cinema legend Michael Armstrong, who passed away in 2020. Before the show the club’s new kitchen, made possible by Michael’s kind legacy, will be officially unveiled, while there’ll be a short film about his cinematic odyssey and a display.

The Smallest Show on Earth will bring back happy memories for older folk, who regularly went to the pictures before the coming of the multiplexes. The story revolves around a young couple, played by Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, inheriting a run-down picture house staffed by eccentrics. The cast make the movie hugely entertaining with the inimitable Peter Sellers as the projectionist, Margaret Rutherford the pianist and Bernard Miles the doorman.

The bar will be open and there will be ice creams available and maybe bowls of roast potatoes.

Admission is free, but donations, if desired, may be placed in a tin for the PACT Animal Sanctuary.

The photo shows Michael Armstrong explaining the workings of the old Kalee 12 projectors to Virginia Mckenna on her visit in 2007 when he also presented her with a cheque for £1200 for the Born Free Foundation.
