If you haven’t heard of Great Big Green Week (GBGW) before, it’s a UK wide celebration of community involvement and participation to tackle climate change & protect nature, taking place this September.

We’re starting to see the effects of climate change now: more extreme temperatures, how the current drought is affecting everyone. Here in the agricultural heartlands of England we’ve had bumper grain harvest but the ground is so dry the yields of potatoes & sugar beet will be down, poor yields mean higher prices. The ground is now so arid that the planting of next year’s grains is in jeopardy.

We as a community can help to tackle climate change. To borrow a phrase from a supermarket chain, “every little helps”. That’s where we come in, together we can all make that little difference. Consider recycling or repairing instead of buying something new to reduce emissions. Plant that tree & tend it for the first few years. Maybe let that hedge grow more to offer cover for birds. There’s a million and one things we can do to start making that little difference.

Kett’s Books will have a window display themed for GBGW from September 6th right through to October 6th. For example, how to reduce your carbon footprint or how to help Hedgehogs, Bees or Birds in your garden, there’s plenty of book advice out there. Check out the Kett’s Books window display, maybe buy that book on helping tackling climate change or to protect nature, Kett’s Books are our local community bookshop. Alternatively, visit the Wymondham Library & borrow a book The Library will also have an environmental themed display running for a month from September 7th. Getting your books locally means less packaging and a lower carbon footprint.

GBGW events – there’s lots of events in Wymondham. You will find them in the What’s On section of this issue of the Magazine. Come along to an event: Find out more about our town’s Green Spaces or Wymondham Growing Together, participate in Take it for Free, come in search of Bats, volunteer for the Litter Pick. It’s all about us as individuals making that little difference for us all as a community.
