The photo was taken on the island of Hokkaido in Japan in winter and I was drawn to the very beautiful monochromatic scene and the sense of a real wilderness. The image was taken with a Nikon D800 with a 70-200mm zoom lens at 70mm, 1/250s at f11 and ISO 200.
The judge commented that this was his favourite image of the competition due to its simplicity. “The detail in the sky and the minimalist detail in the trees produced a bold statement reflected and enhanced by the title of ‘The Wasteland’.”
