Nine community projects will each receive a share of £75,000 from South Norfolk Council’s Community Action Fund. The panel made up of councillors met in October to allocate grants of up to £15,000 to projects that will enhance the lives of local people.

Chair of the panel, Cllr Kim Carsok, said: “These grants make a huge difference, supporting projects that bring people together and improve people’s quality of life. The grant can also be a catalyst for other funding streams.”

Projects that benefited were:

Alburgh Village Hall £1,231 – Funding will be used to relocate the boiler to allow for the addition of a “fun zone” for children 12+

Brockdish Village Hall £5,500 – To fund improvements to the halls acoustics so that a more diverse range of hirers can make use of the facilities

Bungay Black Dog Running Club £8,000 – To contribute to the costs of a mobile covered training facility so that runners can train in all weather conditions

Harleston Exchange 2 £7,500 – To contribute to the costs of an interior refurbishment of the cabin so that it is an inviting and enjoyable space for young people

Loddon Town Council £15,000 – to contribute to the costs of refurbishing the toilets and kitchen so that they accessible. The project will also include the addition of shower facilities for gym-goers attending Loddon Community Gym.

Pulham Market Memorial Hall £10,000 – To contribute to the cost of replacing the play equipment at the village playground.

Runhall Community Group £15,000 – To replace the current climbing frame at Runhall Recreation Ground with an inclusive play fort.

Waveney Volunteers for Nature £7,500 – To purchase a mechanical scythe and trailer so that the volunteers can maintain green spaces across the district

Wymondham Community Outreach Project £5,269 – to purchase additional equipment needed to help WCOP run an effective foodbank and drop in centre.

Over the years, the Council has supported numerous projects, including a £15k grant to help transform Hempnall Playpark. Sarah Batchelor, who was instrumental in getting the park updated, said: “The park was in need of drastic renovation, we knew it could be a really fantastic asset to the village and much better used.”

Work started in December 2022, with the old equipment swiftly replaced by a brand-new climbing frame, zipwire, rope swing, wheelchair accessible roundabout and swings. The park also has a new fenced off toddler area, which includes mini climbing frame, baby swings and role play area. 11 benches were also added to the area paid for by local companies and community groups. In September 2023, the village celebrated the new park with a community event, which included village rounders, food trucks and live bands.

Sarah said: “It has been lovely to see the park used far more than it was previously and is now a destination for people to come with their children and grandchildren.”

Cllr Carsok added: “If you want to make a positive difference to where you live and need help with funding, please contact your local Councillor.”
