A new generation of Wymondham rugby players brought back two County Cups from the Big Norfolk Rugby Weekend.

The wins from the club’s Under-15 and Under-14 squads - plus a battling defeat in the final for the U16s - is further evidence of Wymondham’s growing strength in the Youth game.

U15s coach Dave Cross said their 28-14 win over West Norfolk had been an amazing game which featured fully committed performances from both sides.

RFC celebrating

He said: “West Norfolk were very quick and ruthless in defence but our players put in 100% on the day.

“We wanted to win and finish the season on a high and I’m so proud of their achievement - and the fact that they did this as a whole squad, with those not playing very vocal in support.

“It makes our job as coaches a pleasure.”

In the U14 final, a dominant pack and excellent passing skills from the backs saw Wymondham’s “Warriors” beat Norwich 17-5. “The team were simply excellent in defence as they absorbed the best of the Norwich attack,” said coach Arthur Pattison.

“I am so proud of this team. It has taken the teamwork and dedication of 40+ players, from 13 different schools, who regularly rock up for training, in all weathers, to push and support each other, striving to improve and to perform.”

The Big Norfolk Rugby weekend was hosted this year by North Walsham RFC and home advantage saw their U16s side beat Wymondham 58-22 in the final.

Wymondham coach Steve Hopkinson said: “A great first half saw us reach the break 24-17 behind but a very strong performance from Walsham’s back line in the second half saw them run away with the game.

“It’s been a difficult season for us with regards availability due to school and other rugby commitments but there have been some fantastic team performances and results and as a group we’ll head into Colts full of confidence.”

In the weekend’s other game involving Wymondham, the club’s senior women’s team, The Wasps, were beaten in the final 36-7 by Lakenham Hewett.
